Very interesting!
I remember reading about ひきこもり in the context of the higher instances of PDDs and Asperger's Syndrome in Japan, but I think I agree with the Wikipedia article that it's more likely a result of the cultural pressures of Japan.
ウオォ～ニートね、そんな事を授業中で話し合って、随分ビックリしたや。あそう、まだ紹介しなかった。僕はルプリ・ニックと申します。（当たり前でしょう、ポストの名前から見えるので 笑）パーデュー大学の二年生で、日本語３０１って言うクラスを取っている。実は、僕はひきこもりって言う人が二人知っている。その人は両親の重荷にはなりたくなかったから、まだ家から引っ越さないのが、本当に肩身が狭そうです。それでも、どうやら社会としては、その人には一寸怖そうです。だがどうやってその情勢になったか、やっぱ僕には不思議だ。
